Electrical Engineering - Grouding/Earthing in aircraft/aeroplane

Earthing in aircraft

In the case of an aeroplane, the structure is likely to become charged during flight. Airport procedures include earthing the plane upon arrival, by attaching an earthing cable to the fitting provided on the aircraft. This conductor returns the aircraft to local earth potential and discharges any accumulated static charges, an important consideration prior to refueling activities
A controlled earthing system with monitoring facilities from remote operation can be implemented. So in this situation one can use the earthing system with a Zenner barrier and after the complete discharge of accumulated charges on the aeroplane a permissive signal can be send to the system to the operator on the control system to proceed with the refueling activities as applicable.
Same system is used in discharging the mobile equipments in the Hazardous areas in the Petrochemical and refinery complexes where hydrocarbon may be present and chances of fire.
Inside the aeroplane during the flight there is an intermediate insulation barrier which restricts the accumulation of charge/static electricity. So no need earthing from inside of the aeroplane for the static electricity.
